Online and in-store clothing and shoes purchases under $100 will be exempt from the state sales tax of 6.35 percent from Sunday, Aug. 18 through Saturday, Aug. 24.
The exemption includes clothing/shoes that are primarily designed for and normally not worn except when used during an athletic activity. For example, while basketball shoes are exempt, football cleats are not.
Other products that are not eligible for the tax exemption during this period are accessories like jewelry, handbags, wallets, watches, luggage and other items “not worn on the body in the manner characteristic of clothing.”
As mentioned, items purchased online and delivered to Connecticut are also eligible for the state’s exemption. Keep in mind that shipping and handling are not considered part of the purchase price of your product. This means that if shipping and handling would push the cost of your item over the $100 limit, it’s still eligible for waived sales tax.
Finally, remember that you can put items on layaway that are eligible for the exemption as well. Connecticut’s tax-free holiday layaway provision states that if you put an item on layaway and make the first payment during tax-free week, none of the payments will include tax. This means that shoppers can feel free to take advantage of tax-free shopping even if they’re light on cash at the moment.
